In South Africa we have Mampoer! It is a firey spirit, truly indigenous to South Africa- no other spirit elsewhere in the world may be called Mampoer. Available in peach, maroela, litchi and cherry flavours.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHakkiesdraad Mampoer is distilled (gestook) in a potstill to the highest purity using the traditional double distillation method. There is no sweetening or fortification with any cane sugar. The exceptional smoothness and unique flavour is derived from a lengthy and gentle copper distillation and separation of a clean middle cut or heart, says distiller Moritz Kallmeyer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA recent review by Rebekah Kendal placed on website iafrica.com had this to say about Hakkiesdraad: “ Call me a party pooper, but I can’t help but think that a bottle of alcohol that comes wrapped in barbed wire should be approached with least a bit of caution. I mean, seriously, you could injure yourself before the stuff even touches your lips –which says a lot about how much damage the actual drink could do.. Surprisingly, the liqueur in question –Hakkiesdraad Mampoer – which is made from marulas, actually has a relatively low alcohol content of 50 percent. Low? Well yes, when you consider that some brands of mampoer and witblits reach a whopping 80 percent. These South African equivalents of moonshine – which could probably be used more effectively as jet fuel – are about as deeply embedded in collective South African psyche as beer and boerewors. Legend has it that mampoer is named after the rascal Chief Mampuru, who murdered his brother, started a war and was hanged. Mmm..
